It’s always terrible when an aircraft crashes for whatever reason, even more so when it comes at the end of an extraordinarily successful week for Europe’s helicopter industry.

For those of us attending the European Helicopter Association (EHA) General Assembly meeting at IFEMA this morning (1 December), it has an even greater piquancy with the knowledge that it involved two colleagues, our friends, and was just a few hundred metres away.

There has already been a good deal of speculation, some of it excessive, which is to be expected from the mass media. But such ‘tabloidesque’ reporting from the trade media is disappointing because speculation, however informed, is just that – speculation – until the investigation team from Spain’s CIAIAC has completed its work.

The good news is that none of the injuries for the three people involved in the crash were life-threatening. We wish everyone involved a speedy and complete recovery.
