Bristow pilots and SAR technical crew have begun a series of strikes in support of their pay and conditions claim. Initially planned for March but delayed following the tragic loss of a Bristow Norway S-92, the strikes are scheduled for Tuesdays to Thursdays and will impact both Offshore support and SAR operations. The first action, which saw Offshore Pilots ‘down tools’ from 00:01 this morning (7 May), will continue until 23:59 on 8 May. Meanwhile, the first cohort of SAR crews followed suit at 13:00 and will continue their action until 13:00 on 8 May. The second tranche of SAR crews is expected to walk out at 13:00 tomorrow and return at the same time on the 9th.

BALPA, which represents both pilots and technical crews, says that further strikes are planned following the same pattern over the next five weeks, concluding (at present) on the 6 June.

While BALPA has not confirmed what compensation improvements it is seeking for its members, it has pointed to “below inflation” pay increases offered by the company in recent years and discrepancies in benefits between employee groups.

Meanwhile, a Bristow spokesman spoke of the company’s disappointment that BALPA has called its members out on strike despite its offer, which it said “provides significant enhancements to pay and conditions” and comes following “consultation with staff, detailed market analysis and lengthy talks with the union”.

Both sides say that their plans are designed to reduce risk to the public due to HM Coast Guard services being impacted by the strikes.
