Utah’s Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands has reached an agreement with Oregon headquartered Croman Corporation for an exclusive use contract for two SH3Hs for the summer wildfire season. The deal marks the first time the state has had an exclusive use contract for Type 1 helicopters. “This is a greatly needed addition to our firefighting toolbox here in Utah. Along with the assets provided by our federal partners, these helicopters will improve our initial attack and large fire support capabilities,” said Mike Melton, the division’s aviation officer.
The contract, which is due to run for up to five years, will see the two aircraft under contract for 90 days each year from the beginning of June until the end of September. This year however the first aircraft became available on the 15th of June meaning that full cover will be on call during peak risk months of July and August. In addition to the two helicopters the Utah has also recruited three seasonal helicopter managers have been hired that bring a wealth of experience at the federal level managing this type of aircraft.
