At a presentation marking 100 years since the company’s founding, Sikorsky President Paul Lemmo welcomed Sergei Sikorsky son of the company’s founder Igor to the stand to share stories of his father and his role as one of the pioneers of not only vertical flight but aviation itself. Sikorsky revealed that the true genesis of the company came from the composer Rachmaninoff who provided USD5,000 of seed capital that started the company. “My father was building aircraft using things he could scavange from junk yards piano wires, especially made excellent flying wires for aircraft. Then one day Rachmaninoff came to my father’s workshop they talked and, in the end, invested the money that made the company possible”.
