As anyone with any battery equipment can attest, for most of the developed world’s population and a sizeable chunk of the developing world, finding compatible chargers is an enduring and frustrating problem that begs the question, ‘Why did a standard configuration never get defined?’
Among the to-do list of tasks that have to be ticked off for electric-powered aviation to take off, particularly for eVTOLs, is the creation of a battery charging infrastructure – and not least, adopting a globally standard connection fitting. The General Aviation Manufacturers Association’s (GAMA) Electric Propulsion and Innovation Committee (EPIC) has proposed in a new report the adoption of a single charging standard for both air and ground vehicles that can be used worldwide.
In the report, the EPIC group argues that using a unified charging standard for all EVs offers “significant industry, societal, safety and environmental benefits” and points to the Combined Charging Standard (CCS) as the most widely used standard in ground-based electric vehicles as the solution. Furthermore, the report goes on to say that compared with multiple different proprietary designs, a unified system like the CSS would make more effective use of space and will help the rapid development of infrastructure.
