Loren Doughty, who joined Bell Helicopter in 1967 as its Chief of Flight Training, has taken the final flight west at the age of 87. Doughty, who came to Bell following a commission in the US Army, was instrumental in setting up the company’s Flight Training Academy and served as its Director until his retirement in 2001.

Doughty was famed for his teaching of autorotations, as one of his former students recently remarked: “I left that course confident I could autorotate into a small backyard if I had to.” Other ex-students and colleagues spoke of his tremendous legacy at the Bell Training Academy.
