Enstrom Helicopter Corporation has received FAA certification for the crash resistant fuel system (CRFS) on the 480B turbine-powered helicopter, meaning that the OEM can re-enter the global market with the aircraft. Additionally, EASA is finalising a package to signify full compliance of the system in the coming weeks, which will allow Enstrom to also fully re-enter the European market.

The news follows the announcement that the U.S. Congress had approved an FAA mandate that required all helicopter manufacturers to implement CRFS technology into new aircraft, which aims to reduce the risk of post-impact fuel fires during crashes. The fuel bladders were developed in partnership with Safran Aerosystems, using break away fittings to close off fuel lines and reinforced structural elements to avoid leaks and penetration.

“This certification marks a pivotal moment for Enstrom as we reaffirm our commitment to safety and innovation, protecting pilots, passengers, and crew,” said Charles Wade, Senior Vice President of Product, Sales, and Customer Excellence. “The 480B has long been a trusted platform for flight training, law enforcement, and personal transport. Not only are we exceeding modern regulatory demands, but we’re also delivering enhanced survivability that customers can rely on in the most demanding environments.”

Wade added: “We are in the final stages of ground and flight test for the CRFS in the 280FX, with a Q1 2026 target for certification. This will enable sales of newly produced 280FX helicopters globally.”
