Following a review of the number of applications for certification of multi-rotor eVTOLs, EASA has determined that the standards to ensure environmental compatibility – those dealing with noise, engine and gaseous emissions of multi-rotor types – are not covered in any of the three volumes of ICAO Annex 16. Accordingly, the European agency will create a new regulatory framework that is in line with the EU2018/1139 regulation, which deals with environmental performance.

Consequently, EASA has published a consultation paper which sets out proposals for the test procedures for the testing of electrically powered multi-rotor aircraft and has invited comments from stakeholders by 15 June.
